[Feasibility Investigation for Seoul Ring Road (Jangsu - Gyeyang) and Gyeongin Expressway Traffic Congestion Alleviation Measures]
07.08.06 ~ 08.02.13 / Korea Transport Institute

  • The project section is divided between 5 routes. 4 of these are connected with the Seoul Ring Road (Seoul Ring Habu Road, Ilsan - Jangsu Road, Songnae - Namdong Road, Jangsu IC - Seochang JCT Road), and one with Gyeongin Expressway (Bucheon - Sinwol Road). Where possible, a plan for new facilities or widening of existing roads that are able to act as arterial roads to connecting surrounding roads was established. The project is expected to result in the alleviation of traffic congestion on the Seoul Ring Road and Gyeongin Expressway.
  • In all, three proposals were formulated and investigated separately. Proposal 1 included alleviation measures on all 5 routes, proposal 2 on Seoul Ring Habu and Jangsu IC - Seochang JCT routes, and proposal 3 on the two routes in proposal 2 in addition to Songnae - Namdong route. Study results showed a ranking of the proposals in the following order: proposal 2 > proposal 3 > proposal 1.
  • Further investigation confirmed the feasibility for 4 of the 5 routes. Ilsan - Jangsu is impacted by the privately funded Manwol Mountain Tunnel, currently in operation as well as the military bases surrounding the route, which made adequate consultations and investigation difficult, and feasibility could not be confirmed.
