[Research on Calculation of Design Time for Estimation of Appropriate Number of Lanes]

The aims of the research were to identify the issues in the calculation of design time used during at the time of design of the existing Korean expressways, and to propose calculation methods that are more suitable to the conditions in Korea. To achieve this aim, route and region specific calculations were performed and used as the base data to provide more optimal facilities to the road users.
The research was carried out by installing VDS devices on the expressways operated by the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) in April of 2006. The data on traffic volumes was collected on 23 routes, which were divided in 298 sections total.
The expected effects of this research will be to provide a base for determining the direction of design for future expansion and construction of planned routes.
