Research for Establishing Improvement Measures for Traffic Congestion in Metropolitan Areas Korea Transport Institute/2004.4 ~ 2005.5 6

  • Currently, around 59% of cities suffer from serious traffic congestion. This not only causes considerable inconvenience to the residents, but is also economically costly. In addition, congestion on the arterial roads connecting ports with logistics sites increases transportation costs, and weakens the national competitive strength. Consequently, there is an urgent need to establish an investment plan to alleviate the traffic issues in metropolitan areas.
  • The aerial scope of this project included metropolitan areas in Seoul, Busan - Daegu, and Daejeon - Gwangju. Arterial roads, identified as having a considerable beneficial effect on traffic congestion, where chosen in four categories:

  • 1. Arterial roads which provide access to national expressways
    2. Arterial roads which connect greater metropolitan areas
    3. Arterial roads which provide bypass to congested sections within metropolitan areas
    4. Arterial roads which link with main ports, airports, industrial parks, logistics parks, etc.
