[Widening of National Expressway No. 12 (Damyang - Seongsang Section)]

The project aims to improve the functional capacity of the 88 Olympic Expressway and improve the stability of the traffic by widening the National Expressway No. 12 to 8 lanes, increasing freight capacity and contributing to regional development.

Total length of the project route is 14.485km (width B=23.4m, 8 lanes), and it includes 23 bridges, 5 tunnels, and a ramp facility.

The IC configuration was selected to minimize public opposition, and the tunnels were planned with the maximum sight distance to ensure the safety of travel on the mountainous sections. To minimize traffic disruptions on the existing expressway, removal method of existing bridges was carefully selected. In addition, the bridge types were selected to both be compatible with the surrounding scenery, as well as to minimize environmental damage. Environmental considerations led also to the careful configuration of the blasting locations and schedule during construction of the tunnels.
