The Seoul Subway Line No. 9 acts as the central artery between the Gangnam District and south-eastern Seoul. The route starts from Gimpo Airport, passing many central areas on its way towards the Olympic Park in south-eastern Seoul, and has a large impact on the traffic flows within the city.

Construction of Line No. 9 was divided in two stages (25 stations with L=27.7km, and 12 stations with L=11.8km, respectively). Construction followed the two stages, with the 1st stage construction expected to be completed in 2009.

The project section had a total length of 1.14km, with 61.5m of open cut and 606.5m of tunnel for main line, and 330.m for stations, as well as 5 ventilation shafts (4 for air removal, 1 for air intake). Tunnel construction method was chosen to minimize disruption to the traffic system above ground.
