The alignment improvement for the National Road No. 46 will contribute to the development of tourism, improve living standards in the northern part of Gangwon Province, and strengthen regional development and freight transportation capacity.

The project section included Baehureyong Tunnel (L=4,950m), 7 bridges (length 1,065m), 3 interchanges, and had a total length of 9.41km, with 2.9km of existing National Road No. 46. Travel time was reduced by almost 16 minutes.

Baehuryeong Tunnel is the longest tunnel in Korea, and the design included plan for safety facilities to improve the safety of the tunnel. The existing unsuitable ventilation system was modified in cooperation with the Norwegian Sintef. In addition, fire shelters were installed every 185m.
