[Design/Construction Package for Lot 5 of Donghae Expresswau (Donghae - Jumunjin) Widening to 4 Lanes]

The Korean government has concentrated its investments in the project area, with an aim of creating a high-speed, advanced transportation network. Among these investments is the project for widening the 55.9 km long Donghae - Jumunjin section of the Donghae Expresswau to 4 lanes. The widened road will prepare for the increase traffic demand to the Seorak Mountain resorts and the eastern coastal area. The road will also connect with Chuncheon - Yangyang Expressway, forming a road network ready for any possible reunification of the two Koreas, and promoting balanced regional development.
Lot 5, length 3.87 km, was located between Sanseongu-2 and Imgog-1 villages, and included Jeongdongjin, an important tourist destination. Main structures along the route were Sanseongu and 2nd Donghae Tunnel, and 4 bridges. Design of bridges had to take into account the various canyons and streams the route passes over. These natural obstacles were avoided, and where tall piers on bridge substructures were unavoidable, constructability, economy, and environmental aspects were considered, and steel composite bridge type was applied. In addition, on the sections passing steep slopes, wire cylinder retaining walls were installed on the side of bridges and intersections to ensure safety.
